Breaking: Horse carriage cruelty on its way out in NYC!

Article from Gothamist - Liam Quigley reporting.

The New York City Council and Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday announced they plan to ban carriage horses in Central Park.

Council Speaker Julie Menin said Tuesday her chamber would hold an Oct. 22 vote on legislation to draw down the industry in phases. Several hours later Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he shared Menin's goal.

"The horse carriage industry is coming to an end in New York City," the mayor said in a statement, adding his "administration will make sure workers and owners are protected and the horses are safe."

For years, animal rights advocates have called for an end to the park’s once-iconic carriage horses. The issue was a decisive factor in former Mayor Bill de Blasio's 2013 mayoral campaign, but he left office with the industry in tact.
